Foundations
Accessibility
WCAG 2.2 AA is the floor. Deaf-first, DeafBlind-aware is the bar.
Standard
- WCAG 2.2 AA on every page, in both directions.
- Text contrast 4.5:1, large text and controls 3:1. The Color page measures the tokens live.
- Primary controls are at least 48 px (--tap); every target is at least 24 px (WCAG 2.5.8).
- A visible focus ring on every interactive element.
Deaf-first requirements
- Captions on all video, including muted autoplay backgrounds, plus a transcript.
- No information delivered by sound alone. Alerts are visual, with a text equivalent.
- Offer contact by email, text and video relay. A phone number is never the only channel.
- Plain language, target grade 8. Define terms on first use.
- ASL video summaries for key pages: membership, events, advocacy actions.
Signing on screen
- Signing stays visually unobstructed: no text, UI, subtitles, logos, stickers or CTA overlays over hands or faces.
- Captions are accurate, readable and secondary to the people.
- Essential meaning is never audio-only and never color-only.
- Interfaces are usable without relying solely on sound.
DeafBlind and low-vision
- Semantic HTML and landmarks so screen readers and refreshable braille displays can navigate.
- Text resizes to 200% and content reflows at 320 px with no horizontal page scroll.
- Tables have captions and header cells. Wide tables scroll inside a focusable region.
- Never rely on color alone. Pair it with text, a symbol or a pattern.
Motion and cognition
- prefers-reduced-motion is honored sitewide.
- One primary action per view. Forms use visible labels and text errors.
- Consistent navigation on every page.
Before shipping
- Keyboard only: every action reachable, order logical, focus visible.
- Screen reader pass on the changed pages.
- 320 px and 200% zoom pass.
- Reduced-motion pass.
- Captions and transcript present on every video.
